Networking…Mommy Style!

If you are a stay-at-home mom, you may long for a connection to the outside world. You know what I mean, right? You want a conversation with someone whose vocabulary breaks the 2 syllable barrier; where there are no wet wipes needed and the only milk involved is the cream in your coffee.

Sometimes we might feel guilty about this longing that we have. I am here to tell you to lose the guilt. It is normal to desire stimulating girl talk with latte in hand.

So what happens when you actually have a few moments to yourself? Where should you go, what should you do? Even though going straight to bed to catch a few winks is tempting, don’t give in. Get out and network! The internet has made it much easier to find out what’s shaking in your neighborhood.

I was concerned when my family and I were relocated to the Seattle area almost 5 years ago. I did not know one person within 2400 miles of my house. Luckily, I did have one school age child which made the transition more bearable. If you have a religious affiliation, church is a great place to get to know other moms. If not, there are co-op preschools, parks galore and even shopping malls have gathering places for parents and their tots. You may have noticed in your own neighborhood that there are mommies with strollers, babies in tow, exercising and socializing together. What a great idea, conversation and calorie burning. I love it!

Do you have a passion for crafts? Join a knitting group or quilting group. Fancy a good read? Join a virtual book club or find a local group.

For working moms looking for an online resource MommyTrack’d is a great site. There tag line is “The working mother’s guide to managed chaos”. Another great website called Cafe Mom has been called the “My Space for moms”. So no more excuses mommies…Ready, Set, Network!

I used to feel this same way until my youngest, Kaden, was diagnosed with cancer in December. Now I say take the kids with you and meet some friends at the park, at the library, at the museum, for a day of painting, anything, but cherish every moment with them. Once I was forced to face just how short life may be, I began to cherish my kids more. I know that only 1 in 330 children will get cancer before the age of 20, but there are other things that can change the time that we have with them.

That is so sad. I am so sorry! I can’t even imagine how that must change your life. I bring my daughter on all of my “mommy” outings! I cherish every day with her. :-)
