Reading Strategies for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers!

Do you remember sitting on your mother’s lap while she read you a story? Most of us have fond memories of having a parent, teacher, or caregiver read to us. The reading experts call this “lap reading”, and it is vital to a child’s reading development. In fact, according to some reading researchers, children need thousands of hours of lap reading to prepare them for kindergarten! There are many other easy, simple, and fun ideas you can implement in your home to foster, encourage, and develop little readers!
1. Develop a reading routine such as reading before bedtime, after breakfast, etc
2. Even small infants benefit from hearing a story read aloud! While they do not yet comprehend the story or the words, they are soothed by their mother’s (or father’s) voice, and are learning about language as you read. In addition, pictures, photographs, and illustrations that accompany the book are visually stimulating.
3. Read every day to your baby, toddler, and preschooler, even if it is just to take a “picture walk” and look and talk about the pictures. This will help with sound-sight recognition.
4. Start a love and appreciation for books from an early age! Immerse your child in books: board-books for babies, books for the bathtub, books for the car, etc. I never leave home without books, having them in the diaper bag and in the mini-van!
5. Have a variety of books available, whether you purchase them or borrow them from the library. If your toddler is really interested in trains, get several fiction and nonfiction books on that topic!
6. When asked, suggest friends and relatives buy books for your children as gifts. Use books as rewards for your child instead of food, stickers, and other often-used prizes.
7. Contact your local library to see if they have a story hour for babies and toddlers.
8. If your child seems uninterested after starting to read aloud, then stop. Never force a child to listen to a story.
9. Talk about the story before, during, and after you read to acquaint the child with the story structure, that every story has a beginning, middle, and end.
10. Always read the title, author, and illustrator of the book before beginning to read. Show the front cover and title page, point to the left page , then the right page, so babies and toddlers begin to learn about what the reading experts call “concepts about print”.
11. Sing rhyming songs and read nursery rhymes to your child. Learning about rhyming words is critical to early reading development!
12. Don’t forget about on-line reading. There are many sites like PBS.org and Disney that have stories read aloud to children. Clifford, Little Einsteins, Arthur, and more stories and videos are available!
